There is often confusion about the terms Built In and Built Under. Built In ovens are so called because whilst they can go underneath a counter, they can also be eye-level mounted in a tall unit. Built Under ovens are designed to the same height as a standard base unit and are solely designed to go under a counter (they have a plinth recess to match your units) and cannot be fitted at eye level. Unfortunately, a Built Under oven can also be described as Built In. This is because it is designed to fit under a worktop, but people think of it as being Built In to their kitchen. It is confusing to say the least.

Single ovens

Single oven means the oven has a single cavity. There are many variations of single oven available. The main differences, other than appearance, are the functions or types of cooking that these ovens will perform. The vast majority of Built In single ovens are now electric although there is still a limited range of Built In gas ovens available. Neff offer an exclusive range of Slide and Hide ovens that feature a door that folds away under the oven. This is extremely useful where space is at a premium or when you simply want unrestricted access to your oven.

Compact ovens

Compact ovens are smaller than regular single ovens and have a single cavity. These products are designed to be installed alone, combined with other compact models or with full size ovens.

Classic microwave ovens

Classic microwave ovens are smaller than both full size and compact ovens. A grill function is available in some models but full combination options are generally only available in compact models.

BE WARNED, this is one of the most mis-ordered items we sell! Most classic (and all compact) models will not fit within a wall unit as they are too deep so it is crucial that you check carefully.

Double Ovens Built In

Double oven means the oven has two cavities. The top (or secondary) oven would normally be a conventional oven and grill. The bottom (or main) oven is normally a fully multifunction oven although some models only offer fan cooking.

Oven Cleaning Systems

Enamelled - Enamelled steel liner cleaned by hand.
Catalytic - Liners that clean themselves but only cover part of the oven.
Pyrolytic - High temperature self cleaning oven.
Steam - An option with all models that have a steam generator.

Choosing a new hob for your kitchen can be a daunting prospect, with so many options and cooker types to choose from. Below we have outlined some of the main options available and explained the differences, so that you can make an informed choice.

There are four types of electric hob

Induction

This type of hob uses a powerful magnetic field to heat the bottom of a saucepan. The only types of saucepans that will work with an induction hob are those that have a magnetic base. These pans are easily available from major department stores. When all is taken into account induction is the fastest, cleanest cooking around. The heat can be turned down very quickly to avoid boiling over and with up to 15 heat settings they are extremely flexible.

Ceramic

A hard, brittle heat-resistant material made by firing a mixture of substances at a high temperature. Best described as an electric heating element concealed under glass. This type is much quicker than the solid plate hobs of old.

Solid plate

This type of hob is very common in older kitchens, but is now not so popular apart from rental properties due to the indestructible nature of the hob. The plates are made of cast-iron, which can rust and are slow to cool down so keep them dry and watch the red dot for indication of residual heat.

Gas Hobs

Apart from the obvious colour choices, there are also various types of pan support available.

Cast iron pan supports

These are considered to be the most durable. Generally, this type should not be put into a dishwasher for cleaning as they can rust. Hobs with cast iron supports are normally slightly more expensive.

Enamelled pan supports/burner caps

These are normally manufactured from mild steel and then enamelled. This type can normally be cleaned in a dishwasher. Over a long period of time, the enamel can become brittle and chip off due to the amount of heat generated by the gas burners. The burner caps will become dull, and this can happen relatively quickly.

Stainless steel pan supports/burner caps

Stainless steel pan supports will turn blue when heat is applied. Some brands offer these on some of their hobs, but usually offer alternative black pan supports and burner caps for an extra cost.

Gas on glass

There are also a lot of gas on glass hobs, which are made of the same material as ceramic hobs, very stylish and easy to clean. This glass is in fact a very dark red, and is used because it is hard wearing and can cope well with extremes of temperature.

Controls

Gas hobs are available with touch controls or various types of knobs/controls and these can be situated on the front or side of the hob. We are often asked for hobs with side controls as it is considered that this style is safer when there are young/small children about. Front controls are preferred by those who are left handed, as side controls are always on the right.

The main reason for installing an extractor is to take away the smells and grease that are produced during cooking and there are many styles available.

There are many types of hood/extractor available:

Sloping hoods – Fitted against a wall and gently sloping to improve headroom
Chimney – Fitted against a wall in the classic style
Island and Pendant Hoods – Suspended from the ceiling, away from the wall, above a furniture island or peninsular
Integrated – Fitted between your cupboards and with a furniture "flap" door fitted to the front
Canopy Motor Units – A fixed unit that is to the underside of a wall unit, canopy or chimney breast
Conventional – A fixed depth hood that is fitted against a wall either alone or below a shorter wall unit
Telescopic – A pull-out hood that is fitted to the underside of a wall unit
Downdraft – Designed for use in an island or peninsular with a section that rises from the worktop
Ceiling – Designed for use above an island or peninsular and fitted flush with your ceiling

Extractors will clean dirty air caused by cooking by passing it through a grease filter first, which is normally made up of layers of aluminium mesh (metal grease filters). A few extractors do still use paper or fibre grease filters, which can be washed a few times but will eventually need to be replaced. Metal grease filters can be washed in the sink or a dishwasher, and therefore do not need to be replaced.
In addition to passing the air through a grease filter the air is then directed to an outside wall through ducting or recirculated, via a charcoal filter to remove smells, back in to the room. Ducting out is the most desirable method as this is more efficient and quieter.

Correct Hood Width

It is not necessary to match the width of the hob and hood. We recommend that the hood is at least as wide as the hob for maximum efficiency. In any event furniture MUST NOT be fitted above, or overlap, a hob unless some form of extraction system is between the hob and your units.

Remote motors

Some manufacturers offer extractors with a remote motor. This means that the motor/fan unit is not situated inside the appliance (or base unit in the case of a downdraft), but is fitted remotely either inside the property along the ducting run or on an outside wall. The main advantage of this type of motor is that they are a lot quieter than standard hoods. The extraction rate is also improved.

A dishwasher can be Freestanding, Fully Integrated or Semi Integrated. Fully Integrated is the term used to describe an appliance that is completely covered by a furniture door when installed. Semi Integrated means that there will be a control panel visible above the furniture door. Freestanding products are far less complicated as they simply stand in a space in your kitchen.

Fully Integrated

Fully Integrated is, by far, the most popular type of Built In dishwasher. Once installed, this machine is virtually undetectable. A full height furniture door (approx. 715mm high) is fitted to the front of the appliance and covers it completely. The controls for this type of machine are on the top edge of the dishwasher door.

Semi Integrated

This type of dishwasher has a visible control panel, which is very similar in size to a standard drawer front.

Compact

A compact dishwasher would typically have a capacity of 4/5 place settings. Built In models are often designed to fit with other compact models and warming drawers in a bank of appliances. As with other types of dishwasher Freestanding models are also available.

In-column

In Column dishwashers do not stand on the floor. These dishwashers are Built In to a tall or mid height housing unit, which does mean that they are slightly smaller in width. Caution: This design must be installed at a higher level to allow the waste water to drain properly. They cannot be installed at floor level.

Dish Drawer

Unusual to say the least - basically, these models are a dishwasher inside a drawer!

Many people search for an oven when they actually require a cooker. A cooker is a Freestanding product that includes an oven and a hob.

Range cookers are available in a wide range of sizes, from 800mm to 1500mm wide. Generally they are 600mm deep but always check first if this dimension is critical.

There are also a variety of styles available. Most manufacturers offer both traditional and contemporary designs often with solid door and porthole doors available.

Many range cookers have a greater oven capacity than Built In ovens. Some Smeg and Britannia models for example have a capacity of almost 80 litres as opposed to regular ovens that vary from 50 to 74 litres.

Standard cooker widths vary from 500mm to 600mm wide. Generally they are 600mm deep overall. Again, always check first if this dimension is critical.

Standard and Range cookers are offered in different fuel types and combinations: Dual Fuel, All Electric, All Gas and often include induction hobs these days.

Many manufacturers recommend that a gap of 50mm, for gas or dual fuel cookers, is left either side of the appliance. A gap of between 5mm-15mm is normally recommended for all electric cookers. Britannia ranges can be fitted right up to adjacent furniture due to the very high quality insulation of the cooker.

It may seem obvious but ensure there is a gas supply in the appropriate location, if required, before ordering

Refrigeration is either Freestanding, Built Under or Built In. Unfortunately though, a Built Under fridge or freezer can also be described as Built In. This is because it is designed to fit under a worktop, but people think of it as being Built In to their kitchen. It is confusing to say the least.

These days most Built In or Built Under refrigeration is integrated. In other words they are hidden by your furniture door although there are some models that take a flat decor panel or have steel or coloured doors that are not designed to be covered.

The most important things to remember are:
Eye level refrigeration cannot be fitted under your worktop.
A Built Under refrigeration cannot be fitted at eye level (and does not require a housing unit).

Freestanding products are far less complicated as they simply stand in a space in your kitchen. Whilst much of the advice in our guides relate to Integrated products much of the information should prove to be useful

It is vital that Integrated refrigeration is correctly installed and ventilated

Fridges

Fridges can be Built Under, Built In or Freestanding, and may or may not have a small freezer compartment or icebox.

A fridge without an icebox is called a larder fridge, and one with an icebox is normally just called a fridge or refrigerator. Matching freezers are available.

All Integrated fridges have an automatic defrost feature, which helps keep the interior of the fridge free from frost.

The bottom section is normally only half depth as the compressor is housed behind this area.

Fridge Freezers

Integrated fridge freezers, due to their size, are always Built In to a tall housing unit and are almost always Fully Integrated (There are some models that take a flat decor panel or have steel or coloured doors that are not designed to be covered).

Frost free Integrated fridge freezers are available from all good manufacturers. This system is also known as No Frost.

The freezer section is usually at the bottom (to give easy access to pull out drawers) but the proportions will vary. The split between fridge and freezer is usually referred to as 50/50, 70/30 or 60/40. If you are buying an integrated model it is vital that you check the compatibility of you housing to ensure the doors line up.

American fridge freezers

These days "American" fridge freezers come from all over the world and now include French Door fridge freezers (Models that have a pair of fridge doors at the top side by side). Many models are also described as "side by side" and comprise a large fridge beside a large freezer.

Whist these are generally Freestanding products they are often surrounded by kitchen furniture. As the doors need to open past 90 degrees and often feature chunky handles check the technical diagrams for these machines to ensure that doors will open fully and internal pullout storage can be used. Where appropriate ensure a water feed is available for fridge freezers with water and ice dispensers. You can also buy some very large fully integrated side by side models if you want to retails a sleek look.

Freezers

Freezers can be Built Under, Built In or Freestanding
The bottom freezer drawer is normally only half depth as the compressor is housed behind this area.
Frost Free Freezers are available from all good manufacturers. This system is also known as No Frost.

Built In Washing Machines

These are available from virtually every brand. The furniture door can normally be hinged on either side, but in most cases the drum door opens to the left only. There are various spin speeds offered. They range from a 1000rpm spin up to a 1600rpm spin, with the latter considered to be better as these machines are given a better energy rating. Spin speeds are usually varied automatically up to the maximum to suit the type of wash. Load capacities are increasing all the time. and large capacity machines can be a real time saver for a busy family. To get an A energy rating (or better, yes there is a rating better than A), modern washing machines have been designed to use a cold water feed only. This means that they heat water as it is needed, rather than use hot water from the domestic supply.

Washing machines are nearly always Fully Integrated, although there are a few Semi Integrated models available. Fully Integrated is the term used to describe an appliance that is completely covered by a furniture door when installed.

Semi Integrated means that there will be a control panel visible above the furniture door.

Built In Dryers

A must for every busy family, there are two types of tumble dryer available. A condenser dryer pumps moisture away to a tank or through a drain hose. Many condenser models incorporate heat pump technology for greater energy efficiency. You can find more on this below.

A ducted dryer requires venting through an outside wall via a flexible hose.

The water from both cycles is taken out via the drain hose so there is no need for ducting. These machines are ideal for use where space is a premium and a separate washer and dryer cannot be accommodated. As these machines perform two functions, the drying load is often around half that of the wash load so either smaller loads are washed and dried or the drying is carried out in two separate loads. These machines can also take longer than a standard washer. Load capacities are increasing all the time, large capacity machines can be a real time saver for a busy family. To get the best possible energy rating modern washer dryers have been designed to use a cold water feed only. This means that they heat water as it is needed, rather than using hot water from the domestic supply.

Standard Taps

Tap finishes include chrome, silk steel, brushed steel, stainless steel, nickel and brass. You will also find many options to match coloured composite sinks. There are many types of single tap or mixer too. A mixer is a tap with both hot and cold water coming from a single spout. The water usually mixes when it leaves the spout. Taps that mix the water within the body or spout can be troublesome if your hot and cold water pressures are not balanced.

Spray Taps

Many models feature a pull out spray either included in the spout or separately. The hose on these taps, similar to a shower hose is extremely useful but takes a lot of wear and is likely to need replacing with use. A decent water pressure is required in order for these taps to function correctly.

Filter Taps

Taps that include a drinking water filter provide bottled water quality at a fraction of the price.

A great addition to any kitchen, a Built In coffee machine is designed to be installed within a full depth tall housing. However, you will need to add an accessory or warming drawer beneath if you wish to match the height side by side with a full size single oven.

Whilst Built In coffee machines will generally handle either fresh beans or powder, coffee made from beans is usually vastly superior in flavour. A variety of strengths will be available to suit your taste with most machines offering a cappuccino milk frothing option too. Most will also allow you to store your favourite coffee options and will also be able to make two cups at the same time.

Many machines will also allow you to make coffee in a variety of cup sizes from small espresso cups to large mugs. Temperature is controlled precisely in order to ensure that perfect coffee is delivered time after time. Telescopic runners usually allow the machine to slide forward to give access to beans (or powder) that are stored within the machine. Most coffee machines have a water tank that needs to be refilled and that can usually also be found here.

These days a warming drawer is something of a must have for a serious cook. Both useful and versatile, they will not only keep your food and plates warm but can be used for dough proving and defrosting delicate food.

Warming and Accessory Drawers

There are two heights available, one is 140mm high, which holds 12 plates; the other 290mm high, which holds 40 plates.

Some brands offer versions with co-ordinating handles to match ovens. Many are handle-less with a push catch closer.

Warming drawers have a heated ceramic glass base plate that is easy to clean, so spillages wipe off really easily.

Warming drawers (and accessory drawers) 140mm high can be installed below a compact appliance such as a microwave or coffee machine.

The compact appliance sits directly on top of the drawer and together they will equal the height of a single oven so will match when installed side by side.

A waste disposal unit can be a great addition to your kitchen although it is very important that the installation is carried out by a qualified plumber and electrician. All waste disposal units are generally very similar with the exception of the control mechanisms. There is a choice of horsepower from model to model with the more powerful models being able to handle tougher challenges. These models are usually larger partly because they have greater insulation to ensure they are not too noisy.

Models described as continuous feed are controlled by a switch on the wall, and are switched off the same way when you have finished pushing waste into the machine.

Models described as batch feed are activated by putting the plug in place and turning it after feeding a batch of waste into the unit.

An air switch is included with, or can be added to, continuous feed units. This is a simple push button set into your worktop to safely activate the unit without the direct use of an electrical switch

Wine coolers are essentially fridges with a glass door and they are designed to store wine at the desired temperature.

Dual zone models (usually 600mm wide) will store red and white wine at different temperatures.

They are normally installed under a worktop however eye level models are also available. The door usually has a steel or aluminium frame and these machines are not designed to take a matching furniture door.

If the machine is to be fitted in a tall housing please ensure adequate ventilation is provided as per the relevant installation diagram.

Many people use these machines for beer and soft drinks as well as wine storage.

Freestanding, Built In or Built Under?

A Built Under wine cooler cannot be fitted at eye level (and does not require a housing unit) as it has a plinth recess.

Boiling Water Taps and Combination Taps

Boiling water taps provide boiling water from a tank either in your sink base unit or below the plinth.

This tank stores water in a vacuum so it only boils as water leaves the tap and meets normal air pressure.

Combination taps will provide not just boiling water but also regular hot and cold water and, in some cases, filtered water as well.

Electric Oven Pre-installation Checklist

Do you have an electric cooker feed?
Most ovens require a cooker feed of at least 30amps. If you have the correct feed you will have a dedicated cooker switch close to your cooker and you can check the rating on your fuse board. This will usually be 30 or 40amps.
A few ovens can be connected via a 13amp plug to a regular socket.
Compact microwaves can be connected to a 13amp (plug) feed but a compact combination oven cannot.
If the relevant socket or outlet is more than 1meter from the product there may be an additional cable charge.

Do you have enough power?
You may just be connecting an oven to your cooker feed, or you may also be connecting a second oven and even an electric hob to the same feed.
To be sure that you have enough power add together the amperage of each product (shown on our site) and compare this to the fuse rating of your cooker circuit.

For example;
If your oven has a 16amp rating and your combi-microwave has a 15amp rating – giving a total of 31 amps you will need a 40amp cooker feed.
If you then wanted to add an induction hob with a 30amp rating you would need an additional cooker circuit.

Are you replacing an existing machine
If you are replacing an existing machine please ensure you have ordered a replacement of the same type and size.

Check the technical diagram
A technical diagram will be shown with the product on our website. To ensure the oven housing unit opening is the correct size check the height, width and depth.
Please note that adjustments to kitchen furniture cannot be made or filler panels fitted in order to allow the product to be installed or gaps to be covered.

Are you replacing an existing machine
If you are replacing an existing machine please ensure you have ordered a replacement of the same type and size.

Have you ordered the correct type of oven?
Built under double ovens cannot be fitted at eye level in a housing as they are designed to be fitted under a worktop and do not require a housing.
Eye level double ovens cannot be fitted under a worktop as they are designed to be fitted in an oven housing unit at eye level and do not have a plinth recess.
Single ovens can fitted within appropriate tall or base housing units
Compact ovens can be fitted within appropriate tall or base housing units or combined with single ovens at eye level in an appropriate housing with two openings.

Do you wish to fit a microwave within a wall unit?
Whilst some microwaves will fit within a wall unit those with the depth of an oven housing unit will not. Our technical diagrams will help.

Ensure there are no obstacles to restrict installation
There should not be any switches, pipes or projections behind the oven to prevent the machine fitting correctly within the housing.

Have you advised us of any access or parking issues?
Our engineers need to know in advance if there are any restrictions to access such as steps, narrow doors or if your kitchen is not on the ground floor with level access. We also need to know if there are any parking restrictions outside the property.

Ensure there are no obstacles to restrict installation
There should not be any switches, pipes or projections behind the oven to prevent the machine fitting correctly within the housing.

Electric Hob Pre-installation Checklist

Do you have an electric cooker feed?
Most electric hobs require a cooker feed of at least 30amps. If you have the correct feed you will have a dedicated cooker switch close to your hob and you can check the rating on your fuse board. This will usually be 30 or 40amps.
A few electric hobs can be connected via a 13amp plug to a regular socket.
Please check the power rating of the hob you have selected. Full details can be found with the product on our site.
If the relevant socket or outlet is more than 1meter from the product there may be an additional cable charge.

Do you have enough power?
You may just be connecting a hob to your cooker feed, or you may also be connecting an oven or two to the same feed.
To be sure that you have enough power add together the amperage of each product (shown on our site) and compare this to the fuse rating of your cooker circuit.

For example.
If your oven has a 16amp rating and your combi-microwave has a 15amp rating – giving a total of 31amps you will need a 40amp cooker feed.
If you then wanted to add an induction hob with a 30amp rating you would need an additional cooker circuit.

A technical diagram will be shown with the product on our website. To ensure the existing hob cutout is the correct size check the width and depth. The existing hob will need to be lifted in order to check this unless you have the installation manual that should give you the size.
Some hobs require clearance underneath, especially if you have an oven underneath, so please check the specification carefully. Induction hobs in particular are often thicker than other types of hob.

Do you have the correct clearance above your electric hob?
If we are to install a new hob for you we must ensure the installation conforms to current regulations. If a hood has been installed above the hob a gap of 650mm between the electric cooker and base of the hood is required. This is reduced to 450mm if the hood is a sloping model.
This area must be clear of flammable materials including appliances, furniture and wall sockets and extends to 90mm each side of the product (These clearances are subject to manufacturers’ variations)

Induction hobs require compatible pans
Pans designed for use on an induction hob will give the best results. If a magnet sticks to the base of your current pans they will work although not always as well as those specially designed for induction.

Ensure there are no obstacles to restrict installation
There should not be any switches, pipes or projections behind the hob to prevent the machine fitting correctly within the space.

Tall Integrated Refrigeration Pre-installation Checklist

How is your furniture door attached to the appliance door?
There are two fixing methods for integrated refrigeration.

Door Sliders
The furniture door is hinged to your housing and slider clips then attach the furniture door to the fridge door.
Note. If your existing appliance has a slider mechanism we can install either type as a replacement.

Fixed Door on Door
The furniture door is fixed directly to the appliance door.
Note. If your existing appliance has a slider mechanism we can install either type as a replacement.
If you existing appliance does not have a slider mechanism we can only replace this with a door on door appliance.
Doors are usually reversible and can be fitted to open from the left or right.

Refitting your existing furniture doors
Wherever possible we try to avoid re-drilling kitchen furniture doors. Minor alterations may be necessary to the kitchen furniture that will be advised on site. Drill holes to the rear of your door may be visible if the new appliance has a different fitting system.

Check the appliance configuration
Your appliance may be a larder fridge, fridge with an ice box, freezer or fridge freezer. Please check you are ordering the correct model.

Check your fridge freezer split
Fridge freezers fitted as two separate units are usually of equal size and have a furniture dividing shelf within the housing for the fridge to sit on.
One piece fridge freezers require no dividing shelf but are not always a 50/50 fridge and freezer split. In some cases the split is 70/30 or even 60/40. It is vital that you select the correct configuration to match your existing furniture doors otherwise they will not line up.

Ensure you have ordered the correct type of product
Freestanding appliances cannot be fitted within furniture housings.
Integrated appliances cannot be used as freestanding.
Built under appliances cannot be fitted into a tall housing.
Eye level integrated appliances cannot be fitted under a counter top.

Some side by side fridge freezers have ice makers and water dispensers. These models often require a water feed. We will not be able to make this connection if there is not an existing water feed beside the installation space.

Check the product specification
Product specifications will be shown with the product on our website. To ensure the opening for the appliance is the correct size check the height, width and depth.
The depth of side by side fridge freezers varies a lot so if you want the product to line up with adjacent items check the depth carefully making sure the measurement you use includes the doors. Counter depth models are available although the doors on these models often stand proud of the work surface in order to open fully.

A fully integrated machine has a door that covers the whole of the front of the machine with the controls on the top of the dishwasher door. A semi integrated machine has a visible control panel on the front of the dishwasher with a matching furniture door below. Please ensure you order the correct type of machine.

The necessary connections should not be behind the dishwasher as this can prevent the front of an integrated machine aligning correctly.

Ensure there are no obstacles to restrict installation
