Built In appliances are designed to fit into your kitchen units but remain visible, as opposed to Integrated appliances, which require a furniture door to match your kitchen and, with the exception of Semi Integrated models with a visible control panel, will be completely hidden.

Built In appliances are so called because whilst they can go underneath a counter, they can also be eye-level mounted in a tall unit. Built Under appliances are designed to the same height as a standard base unit and are solely designed to go under a counter.

Avoid common ordering and installation errors

  • First of all, make sure you understand the difference between Built In and Built Under.
  • Eye level Built In products do not have plinth recesses (the toe space below your base units) so cannot be fitted under a worktop.
  • There are a range of appliances such as double ovens, fridges and even wine coolers made to fit under your worktop that cannot be fitted at eye level and not surprisingly there are also a range of double ovens to fit in a tall housing at eye level that cannot be fitted under your worktop.
  • There are also a range of issues to consider when selecting a microwave. For example, a standard size Built In microwave will fit into a tall or base housing unit but not a cupboard wall unit that is usually only 300mm deep.
  • You cannot build in a Freestanding microwave - or any other Freestanding appliance for that matter.
  • Correct ventilation is very important and varies between the Built In and Built Under variations of similar products.

Ovens - "Built in" or "built under"?

built in oven   built under oven   There is understandable confusion about the terms Built In and Built Under. Ovens can be either. Unfortunately though, a Built Under oven can also be described as Built In! This is because it is designed to fit under a worktop, but people think of it as being Built In to their kitchen. It is confusing to say the least!

The most important things to remember are:
  • A 900mm eye level double oven cannot be fitted under your worktop.
  • A 720mm Built Under double oven cannot be fitted at eye level (and does not require a housing unit).
  • Single ovens can be fitted in a housing at eye level or under a worktop.
Both types of installation are shown here (Built In, left, and Built Under, right).

Refrigeration - "Built in" or "built under"?

built in and built under refrigerators      Fridges, freezers, fridge freezers and wine coolers are either Freestanding, Built In or Built Under.

But again, as with ovens, use of the terms can be interchangeable, causing confusion.

The most important things to remember are:
An eye level fridge or freezer cannot be fitted under your worktop.
A Built Under fridge or freezer cannot be fitted at eye level (and does not require a housing unit).

Both types of installation are shown here. (Built In, left, and Built Under, right)
